In our tech-driven world, we’re constantly surrounded by devices that emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs). From the phones in our pockets to the WiFi routers in our homes, EMFs are constant. While they have been around forever, the unbelievably rapid growth in technology has many new and expecting mothers wondering: just how safe is EMF exposure for babies?

Understanding how EMFs can impact our bodies and our growing babies during pregnancy is crucial, as more and more research is emerging suggesting that these hidden frequencies could pose health risks that we don’t fully understand yet. 

Thankfully, it’s not a reason to panic. There are simple, practical ways we can protect our babies from EMF exposure even before they’re born. We just need to be informed and proactive to make sure we’re giving our babies the best, healthiest start we can.

What Are EMFs and How Are We Exposed?

There are two main types of EMFs:

  • Low-frequency (non-ionizing) radiation is the type of EMF we are most commonly exposed to from everyday devices like our phones and Wi-Fi routers.
  • High-frequency (ionizing) radiation is the type of EMF emitted by X-rays and is known to cause cell damage at high levels. 

The man-made EMFs that are causing the most concern for mothers today are these invisible areas of low-frequency radiation produced by our electronic devices. While non-ionizing radiation is considered to generally be safer than ionizing radiation, there is a growing concern about the long-term health impacts because of our ever-increasing use of wireless devices. In our day-to-day lives, we are constantly exposed to EMFs. The question is, how is this exposure impacting pregnancies and babies?

Safe Phone Proximity when Pregnant

Is it safe to have a phone in your pocket during pregnancy? What about on the nightstand, in the purse, or resting on your “bump?” These are questions many expecting mothers are asking, and while research on the topic is ongoing, there is growing evidence that keeping our devices close may pose a risk to developing babies.

One laboratory study from the Yale University School of Medicine found that cellphone radiation exposure during pregnancy affected the offspring’s developing brain. The author of the study, Dr. Hugh Taylor, concluded,“It’s probably safer for a pregnant woman not to carry their cell phone clipped to their belt or sleep with the phone near their abdomen unless it’s turned off. Fetuses’ developing brains are fragile and more vulnerable than adults, so it is prudent to keep the phone at a distance.”

There is a lot of conflicting information out there. Some sources insist cell phone proximity to an unborn baby is safe because there is no human study “directly” linking this to any harm. Many other researchers point to the proven conclusion that children’s bodies absorb more EMF than adults. If this is the case, why wouldn’t we be keeping our EMF-emitting devices safely away from contact with babies in some of their most vulnerable stages? 

Technology is growing and changing faster than medical science can keep up with the risks associated with it. This is why the precautionary principle comes into play. If there’s a chance something could be harmful, we must take steps to protect against it.

It’s as simple as changing a habit. Even when you aren’t actively using your phone, it’s always “on.” It’s constantly transmitting signals. Putting distance between you and your phone significantly reduces the amount of radiation your body – and your baby – is absorbing.

WiFi Radiation and Pregnancy

Research has already proven that Wi-Fi frequencies can penetrate living organisms. Research has also proven that EMF absorption extends further into children’s brains and bodies because of their size and percentage of soft tissue. Putting two and two together, this raises some serious concerns about the impact of EMFs emitted by Wi-Fi devices on developing babies in the womb.

Wi-Fi is a staple in nearly every household, but this constant emission of EMFs has raised concern among mothers-to-be. If we want to be part of society, it’s impossible to avoid EMFs altogether. Thankfully, there are simple steps we can take to cut down on our EMF exposure during pregnancy.

Tips for Reducing EMF Exposure During Pregnancy

Making small changes to your routine can have a lasting impact on your health and the health of your baby. We make plenty of lifestyle changes when pregnant, and these simple changes with how we handle technology can have profound impacts.

  • Turn Off Wi-Fi Routers: When you’re through binging your show or online shopping for that cute new baby gear before bed, unplug the router. It only takes a second, but it will significantly cut down on the level of EMFs permeating through your home while you sleep.
  • Use Speakerphone: But remember – phone etiquette says we must always tell the other person that they’re on speakerphone! If the conversation needs to be kept quiet, opt for wired headphones.
  • Keep Devices on Airplane Mode: If you’re able to be completely “unplugged” for a while, this is another great way to cut down on your overall EMF exposure throughout the day.
  • Keep Devices Off the Body: Airplane mode isn’t always an option, especially if we need to be available for work or want to make sure friends and family can reach us if they need to. If you need to stay reachable, get in the habit of keeping your cell phone somewhere close by that isn’t directly on your body.

Small doses from individual devices might seem insignificant, but the long-term effect of constant exposure can add up. We don’t fully know what EMFs are doing to developing babies, so it’s better to be cautious and reduce exposure in any ways we can.

Myth: EMFs Only Affect the Brain

EMFs can potentially affect many different parts of the body, including reproductive organs.

Myth: Laptops and Tablets Don’t Emit Enough EMFs to Cause Harm

Especially when placed directly on or near the abdomen, laptops and tablets can expose developing babies to EMFs. Always keep devices on a desk or table instead of on your lap.

Myth: Wi-Fi is Completely Safe During Pregnancy

Many websites claim Wi-Fi is safe during pregnancy, but given the evidence that Wi-Fi signals can permeate into our bodies, it’s wise to limit exposure – especially during pregnancy.
