Moms Against EMF

Table of Contents

Our kids are plugged into technology more today than ever before. For many of them, gaming is central to their social lives as they “meet up” with friends for online multiplayer sessions. Other kids who prefer games with more world-building and design use gaming as a creative outlet.

Since video games first came out decades ago, parents have debated whether or not they are safe for our kids. Typically, these concerns were centered around the mental effects of video games due to violence or the physical impact of the hours spent sitting in front of a screen. But with the rise of wireless gaming popularity, many of us are starting to question a hidden threat of video games that isn’t often talked about: electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
The reality is, gaming devices emit EMFs, and these could have an impact on our health over time – especially for our children, whose developing brains and bodies are more sensitive to radiation exposure. Let’s take a look at five of the highest EMF-emitting gaming devices of 2024, and how you can reduce EMF exposure if these devices are already in your home or on your children’s wish lists.

What are EMFs?

First, let’s talk about what these electromagnetic fields are and why we should be asking questions about them. Man-made EMFs are the invisible energy fields that all electronic devices emit. Wireless technologies specifically, such as cell phones and devices that connect to Wi-Fi, emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation as they send and receive information.
All gaming systems emit EMFs, but the growing concern in recent years comes from the rise of wireless gaming systems and accessories, such as headsets and wireless controllers. These devices bring radiofrequency EMFs in direct contact with our kids, and the health implications of this are not fully understood yet as this technology is still relatively new. Research has shown that short-term exposure to EMFs can lead to physical, mental, and behavioral issues in children and teenagers.

Do Wireless Gaming Systems Emit Harmful EMFs?

It’s important to remember that any exposure to RF-EMFs can potentially be harmful. Interestingly enough, the major gaming companies have language in their user guides and fine print that essentially protects them from liability from any EMF-related issues in the future. For example, this information can be found on the Nintendo website about the handheld Nintendo Switch:

The available scientific evidence does not show that any health problems are associated with using low power wireless devices. There is no proof, however, that these low power wireless devices are absolutely safe. Low power wireless devices emit low levels of radio frequency energy (RF) in the microwave range while being used.

If the video game companies themselves feel that the potential harm of EMF exposure is worth mentioning, then it’s something that should be on parents’ radars as well.

1. PlayStation 5 (PS5)

The PlayStation 5 is arguably one of the most popular gaming consoles right now. It’s said to deliver some of the best graphics out there, whether your kids are into fast-paced action games or immersive storylines. But since the PS5 connects to controllers and headsets through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, it’s emitting EMFs in extremely close proximity to your child’s body.

What You Can Do

  • Opt for wired controllers and headsets instead of wireless. While this might not be as comfortable while gaming, it cuts down on the EMF exposure in direct contact with the body.
  • Turn off the Wi-Fi or power down the system when not in use. Remember: as long as it’s powered on, the PS5 is emitting wireless radiation.
  • Put some distance between the console itself and your kids while they’re playing. The PS5 guide itself states, “The console should be installed and operated with a minimum distance of 20cm (8 inches) away from your body.”

2. Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is a favorite in our house because it’s so versatile. The kids can play on the big screen in the living room or take it on-the-go in handheld mode. The games are fun, with many family-friendly options for younger kids. However, it also connects through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, making it a constant source of EMFs – especially when it’s in handheld mode and in close contact with the body.

What You Can Do

  • Encourage kids to play docked with the Switch on its stand, using wired controllers.
  • Attach an EMF protection device – like the Aires Tech Lifetune One – to the device itself for a layer of protection when kids are using the Switch in handheld mode.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi when they’re playing solo games that don’t need connectivity.

3. Xbox Series X

This one is a favorite for gamers. It’s been praised for its quick loading times, super crisp graphics, and access to tons of games and online features. But like the PS5, it connects wirelessly with controllers and headsets, and it relies on Wi-Fi for online play, constantly exposing gamers to EMFs while they’re playing.

What You Can Do

  • Limit how long kids spend gaming to reduce their overall exposure.
  • Switch to wired connections for controllers and headsets.
  • Keep the console as far from your kids as possible. There are wired controllers available with 10ft cords, making it easy for kids to distance themselves from the consoles.

4. Oculus Quest 3 (Meta Quest)

The Oculus Quest 3 takes gaming to a whole new level. I’m talking about a totally immersive virtual reality experience. Gamers can explore a fantasy world in 3D, fight off bad guys, and go on incredible “adventures” from the safety of their living room. But since the Oculus Quest 3 sits right on their head and connects through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, it’s a major source of EMF exposure right beside their brains. This makes me wonder how “safe” the experience really is.

What You Can Do

  • Limit VR gaming sessions to reduce this direct body-contact exposure.
  • Have your kids take frequent breaks, and set a timer so kids know when it’s time to take off the headset and step away for a bit.
  • If wired accessories are available, such as headphones or earbuds, use them.

5. Gaming Laptops

For older kids who are into PC gameplay, gaming laptops are gaining in popularity because of their portability. They have powerful processors, graphics cards, and loads of memory, meaning they can handle the most involved games without a problem. And kids love that they can take their games anywhere. However, they emit a heavy load of EMFs due to their Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, and kids tend to sit with the laptops right in their laps which increases their direct exposure.

What You Can Do

  • Turn off Wi-Fi and use an ethernet connection whenever possible.
  • Have your child keep the laptop on a desk when in use, not directly on their lap.
  • If accessories like a mouse or keyboard are needed, opt for wired versions instead of wireless

Protecting Your Child from EMF Exposure While Gaming

Gaming is such a fun part of many of our kids’ lives, but as parents, it’s our job to make sure they’re enjoying it safely. If you’re concerned about your family’s EMF exposure from wireless gaming, here are some additional steps you can take:

  • Set clear boundaries: Have designated times for gaming, and hold the line. This not only helps reduce their overall EMF exposure, but it cuts down on screen time. Since excessive screen time can be extremely detrimental to our children’s physical and mental well-being, being firm on gaming boundaries protects them in more ways than one.
  • Use EMF protection devices: We’ve invested in Aires Tech devices for our home since these small, passive products can be placed directly on our handheld gaming systems like the Switch, worn by our kids when they’re gaming, or next to the larger consoles to help neutralize EMFs. It gives me peace of mind knowing we’ve taken this extra step to protect our family.
  • Create a safe gaming environment: Experts are recommending keeping gaming consoles away from where your children sleep and making sure the room is well-ventilated.

Use a power strip: Keep any gaming consoles plugged into a power strip you can easily switch off when not in use. This will decrease the daily EMF exposure since many consoles are still emitting EMFs when they are in sleep mode.

By being aware of the EMF emissions from our children’s favorite devices, we can take simple steps to reduce their exposure and protect their health. We don’t have to take the games away altogether. Not only would that be a never-ending battle, but it’s also not necessary in most cases. WIth some mindful changes, we can keep our kids safe while letting them enjoy the latest technology.

Stay informed, set boundaries, and don’t be afraid to go back to those good old-fashioned wired controllers!
