When we hear about potential health risks of electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation, it’s easy to feel like this concern is just emerging. After all, wireless devices like our smartphones are relatively new, so how much can we really know about the long-term effects?
Well, it turns out that we know quite a lot about how EMFs could be impacting our health. Research on the effects of EMFs has been piling up for over 30 years, and the findings are pretty clear: EMF exposure could be negatively impacting our health at a biological level. From disrupting sleep and reproductive health to damaging DNA, the science is there. But despite this evidence, regulations haven’t caught up. This leaves us with the responsibility of figuring out how to protect ourselves. The good news? It’s not as hard as you might think.
30+ Years of Research
Dr. Henry Lai, Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and one of the leading experts in EMF research, has put together a huge collection of studies looking at the health implications of EMFs. Spanning from 1990 to 2024, his research summary includes about 2,500 studies on radio frequency radiation (RFR) and extremely low frequency (ELF) fields. The results speak for themselves.
Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR)
RFR refers to the transfer of energy by radio waves. This is the type of EMF emitted by wireless devices such as cell phones, tablets, and smart appliances. Here’s what the studies show:
- 89% of RFR studies on oxidative stress, which is damage from free radicals, found significant harmful effects. Effects can occur even at low specific absorption rates (SAR), at different frequencies, exposure durations, and in different species. This consistency supports the idea that RFR affects free radical processes at the cellular level across the board.
- 71% of genetic studies on RFR reported significant effects on cellular health ranging from sperm quality to DNA damage.
- 77% of neurological studies on RFR found negative health impacts on the nervous system, causing disturbances in neurotransmitters that could be the underlying cause of neurological issues involving memory, learning, and stress.
- 84% of reproductive and developmental studies on RFR found harmful effects, both on male and female reproductive health.
One of the most concerning findings of this research is that 95% of the studies on low-intensity RFR exposure with an SAR of less than 0.40 W/kg (watts per kilogram) reported significant effects. This level is much lower than what current safety guidelines allow, which is 1.6 W/kg. Even at low levels of exposure, EMFs can affect our bodies.
Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Fields
ELF fields are electromagnetic fields with frequencies that fall below 300Hz. These are the fields generated by power lines, electrical wiring, and common household appliances. Studies looking at the effects of ELF fields found similar results:
- 90% of ELF studies on oxidative stress reported significant effects, reporting that chronic exposure to ELF fields is associated with dysregulation that could lead to cellular damage.
- 84% of genetic studies found measurable effects, including 95% of the 203 studies available on gene expression.
- 91% of neurological studies on ELF fields found negative impacts.
- 75% of reproductive health studies showed measurable harm.
This summary of research Dr. Hai compiled spans over 30 years, with the earliest studies published in 1990. In other words, this isn’t new information. We’ve known for decades that EMFs can cause damage at a cellular level, but the guidelines still haven’t budged.

Why Are Electromagnetic Radiation Regulations Stagnant?
Despite all of this evidence, all of the old and new research, the regulatory bodies in charge of setting safety limits for EMF exposure, such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), are still using safety guidelines that were established in 1996. Since then, wireless technology has rapidly evolved.
So why aren’t the guidelines evolving too? There’s no clear answer to that question, but some speculate it could have something to do with the FCC being a “captured agency,” receiving hundreds of millions of dollars from lobbyists from the communications and electronics sectors each year.
These current limits were set based on thermal effects from EMF exposure. This is the idea that the only danger from EMFs comes from heating tissue, but modern research has shown that EMFs can cause biological harm that has nothing to do with heating.
Taking Control of Your EMF Exposure
Since current regulations aren’t keeping up, it’s up to us to take control of our own EMF exposure. There are simple, practical steps and proven technology that can reduce your family’s EMF exposure without having to give up the devices you use every day.
Simple Habit Changes
- Avoid direct body contact with your devices. Keep the phone away from your body and out of your pocket, keep tablets and laptops on the table, and use speakerphone or wired headphones when chatting.
- Cut off the signals. Get into the habit of turning off your Wi-Fi router before going to bed, and switch your phone to airplane mode at night if possible. If you need to be reachable at night, keep your phone far from the bed.
- Use wired connections. Wherever possible, use wired connections like Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
Keep bedrooms EMF-friendly. Keep Wi-Fi routers, phones, and smart devices out of the bedrooms. Not only does this cut down on EMF exposure, but it promotes better sleep! Learn more about the main EMF hot spots in your home in this article.
Aires: The Only Proven EMF Solution I Trust
Lifestyle changes help, but they don’t completely eliminate the effects of EMF on our bodies. After all, we’re constantly surrounded by EMFs, from 5G towers to Wi-Fi and all the devices that connect to both. That’s where Aires comes in. Learn more about my journey in prioritizing EMF protection and why Aires is the only solution I trust and use in my home, for my family and friends.
Aires offers the only scientifically proven EMF protection, backed by 25 clinical studies, 22 global patents, and nearly 30 years of research. Aires works by reshaping chaotic EMFs into a signal that the body can process naturally. It’s not an EMF blocker, but rather reduces biological stress without interfering with your device’s functionality.
